Ju Jitsu

First things first. Jujitsu is not a sport. It is a practical and effective self defence system nearly 2000 years old.

Jujitsu literally translated from Japanese means Gentle or Yielding Art.
The history of Jujitsu is varied and complicated. The exact origins are now lost in history. The most famous practitioners of the art were the Samurai, who learned and developed the techniques as an unarmed self defence system for the battle field.

As such it has a few differences from other arts. The most obvious is its interest in locks and throws. A Samurai wore armour, so strikes were not very effective. Instead an unarmed Samurai had to fight close up and personal. This is not to say that they did not learn striking techniques…these guys liked to be prepared!!

Jujitsu is also referred to as a parent art. From it Judo and Aikido developed.

As stated earlier Jujitsu is no a sport, it is a very deadly art.
As time has gone by, Jujitsu has had to adapt to the times we live in as such much of the more deadly aspect of the art has been reigned in.
